An important business contact
or client has had a baby and you need to send a baby gift. What to
choose? How much to spend? Where to send it? You’ve got questions and
we have answers. Read on to learn about the perfect corporate baby gift.
Be Generous. If you are giving a gift to a client,
it should make a positive impression. For instance, if you choose a very
small gift, such as a bib – even if it is the cutest bib ever -- your
gift will certainly stand out. But not in a good way! You never want to
give the impression that you have cut corners with gift for a business
associate. Some better ideas include baby gift sets (similar items
grouped together such as clothes or layette items) or gift baskets.
Set a Price Range. For a major client, you may
want to give a gift that costs several hundred dollars. However, most
corporate gifts for a new baby probably average around $100, plus shipping
and tax. If you want to give a lavish gift, then purchase a high-end gift
basket and add on a gift card for a local baby store. Your stock will
certainly soar!
Don’t Delay. You should have plenty of notice
about the baby’s arrival, so have a gift in mind and purchase it
promptly. If you wait too long, the gift starts to look like an
afterthought. It’s best to seize the moment and make that great
impression right away.
Do Your Homework. Find out if the baby is a boy
or a girl. You want your gift to make a positive impression, but you
won’t score any points if you give a frilly dress to a future football
player. If it is possible to learn the baby’s first name, be sure to
mention it in the gift card – remember to check the spelling. “Welcome
Baby Brittany. From, Anderson Accounting.”
Is There More Than One? Multiples – especially
twins -- are pretty common these days, so you may have to double up or buy
one gift that can be used for several babies – such as a collection of
fairy tale books or a jumbo diaper bag with matching play-mat. Since
twins are now so common, check online for a great selection of baby gift
baskets.
What About Mom? The latest gift-giving trend is
to give a gift to the new Mother as well as baby. While it’s not
required, if you are really looking to make a big impression this is the
way to do it. A smaller-sized basket filled with bath or spa products is
very appropriate – and will be most appreciated.
Include a gift card. This is especially
important if you are buying from a catalog or online. Make sure that the
company will include a gift card for you – otherwise the recipient will
never know that you sent the gift. Make the message to the point, yet
personal. “Dear Todd and Jackie, Congratulations on the birth of your new
baby boy! We wish you much happiness and joy. From, Alan Paulson and the
staff at Jenkins Electronics.”
Don’t Give at the Office. It is more appropriate
to send the baby gift to the person’s home rather than a place of
business. You don’t want to embarrass the person that you are tying to
impress, and some people are sensitive about receiving gifts in an office
environment. Having said that, some businesses prohibit their employees
from accepting gifts over a certain monetary value. Better read the fine
print if you have a contract – or your wonderful gift might have to be
returned.
Getting Credit. If your gift was sent several
weeks ago, but you haven’t heard from the new parents, it’s acceptable to
inquire. But remember that new parents are usually overwhelmed with a new
baby in the house, so give them plenty of time before you ask. Then do it
in a non-judgmental manner so you don’t make them feel guilty. “Joe, I’m
checking to see how the new baby is settling in?” Then, casually work in
that you had sent a gift and you were wondering if it arrived safely. Be
sure to tell the new Mom or Dad that you don’t need or want a hand-written
thank you – this will earn you additional points with the busy parents!
It’s a Keeper. If you find a baby gift that gets
you raves, then by all means keep on giving it. Just make sure that it
fits the needs and style of the parents. For example, if you know the
parents prefer a modern minimal style, you won’t want to give their baby a
basket filled with country floral baby clothes. In their case, Baby Gap
might be a better choice. There are so many options, that it should be
easy to find something appropriate.
